# How do I use variables to personalise RCS templates?

Variables let one approved template carry different values for each recipient, such as a name, an OTP, an order number or an amount.

## Adding variables to a template

1. In the template form, place your cursor where the value should go.
2. Click **+ Add Var** and pick a variable, for example `[name]`, `[otp]`, `[orderid]`, `[amount]`, `[date]` or `[tracking_id]`. You can also insert numbered custom fields such as `[custom_param_1]`, `[custom_param_2]`.
3. Variables work in text messages, card titles, card descriptions, suggestion text, postbacks and URLs.

## Filling variables when sending

- **Quick and Group send:** after you select the template, the Send RCS screen shows one input per variable (Variable 1, Variable 2 and so on). Enter the values and check the live preview.
- **Custom file upload:** for each variable, choose the column in your uploaded file that holds its value, so every recipient gets their own values.
- **API:** pass the values as `customParams`. See *Can I send RCS messages through the API?*

**Tip:** keep variable values short and within the field's character limits. A long value can make the message fail validation.
