# What is an SMS gateway used for?

An [SMS gateway](https://www.smsgatewaycenter.com/blog/kb/what-are-the-benefits-of-using-an-sms-gateway-for-bulk-messaging/) is used to let businesses send and receive text messages programmatically at scale - connecting software systems (websites, CRMs, banking platforms, e-commerce stores) to mobile telecom networks without needing a physical phone for each message.

Common use cases include:

- **[OTP and authentication](https://www.smsgatewaycenter.com/otp-sms-india/)** — one-time passwords for logins and transactions
- **[Transactional alerts](https://www.smsgatewaycenter.com/transactional-sms/)** — order confirmations, delivery updates, appointment reminders
- **Promotional campaigns** — marketing offers and announcements to opted-in customers
- **Two-way communication** — customer support, surveys, and quiz-based engagement via long codes
- **Automated notifications** — system-triggered alerts via API integration

Businesses across banking, e-commerce, healthcare, and education rely on SMS gateways because SMS has near-universal reach, doesn't require internet access, and has significantly higher open rates than email.
