# What Is SMPP and SMTP? How Are They Different?

**SMPP and SMTP solve different problems.** SMPP (Short Message Peer-to-Peer) is a binary protocol built specifically for exchanging SMS messages between an SMS gateway and a telecom network at high throughput over a persistent connection. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the standard protocol for sending email between mail servers. They're not interchangeable: SMTP cannot deliver SMS to a mobile network, and SMPP isn't used for email. The confusion usually comes from "SMS-to-email" or "email-to-SMS" gateway services, which translate between the two protocols internally, but the underlying transport for the SMS leg is still SMPP (or an HTTP API), not SMTP.
