# What Is SMPP Used For?

SMPP is used wherever an application needs to send or receive SMS at scale with low latency and full control over delivery status, including:

- **Transactional and OTP messaging** for banks, fintechs, and e-commerce platforms
- **Bulk marketing and promotional campaigns** sent through DLT-approved templates
- **Two-way messaging** for surveys, keyword-based opt-ins, and customer support
- **Aggregator-to-aggregator and carrier interconnects**, where SMS traffic is exchanged between networks
- **Enterprise systems** (ERPs, CRMs, core banking platforms) that need a direct, persistent connection rather than repeated API calls

If your application sends more than a few thousand messages a day, needs sub-second latency, or requires two-way SMS handling, SMPP is usually a better fit than a simple HTTP API.
