# What is the PE-TM chain, and why do messages fail without it?

Every commercial SMS in India must be traceable from the business that sends it to the customer who receives it. The **PE-TM chain** is how that trail is recorded on DLT.

- **PE (Principal Entity)**: your business, registered on a DLT portal.
- **TM (Telemarketer)**: each messaging provider your SMS passes through, such as SMS Gateway Center.
- **Chain**: the ordered list of telemarketers, from you to the operator, that you declare on your DLT portal.

## Why it matters

TRAI required operators to trace every commercial message from sender to recipient. From **11 December 2024**, messages whose telemarketer chain isn't declared, or doesn't match the declared chain, are **rejected**.

## What you need to do

1. Log in to the DLT portal where your business is registered.
2. Add SMS Gateway Center as a telemarketer in your chain, using the step-by-step guide for your portal:

3. Wait for the chain to be approved, then send a test message.

## When to review your chain

Review it whenever you add or change a messaging provider, or register on a new DLT portal. Also review it if messages suddenly fail with DLT rejection errors even though your header and template are correct.
