What actually drives SMS cost
Cost is driven by billable segments, not raw character count. GSM-7 encoding fits 160 characters into one segment; a single character outside that set, an emoji, a curly quote copied from a document, an en dash, forces the whole message into Unicode encoding, which drops the limit to 70 characters per segment. A message that looked like one segment in a text editor can silently become two or three when sent.
How this tool decides what to fix
Formatting fixes, replacing smart quotes with straight ones, dashes with hyphens, non-breaking spaces and extra whitespace with normal spacing, don't change what your message says, so they're applied automatically. Anything that changes the actual content, removing an emoji, shortening a phrase, or estimating a shortened URL, is shown as an optional suggestion you tick individually.
