This is going to be a very small post explaining “How Special Characters are Counted in Bulk SMS Services” from any bulk SMS aggregator across the world.
We have been getting several mails from our resellers and customers to integrate our SMS API and understanding the SMS Characters count policy. So here it goes,
Special characters such as
_ # () < > % : ; . ? * + – / & ∼ ! = , ” ’
are treated and counted differently from character to character.

Basic Character Set: GSM 7 Bit Alphabet:
Following characters are counted as single character.
Extension Table Characters:
Following characters are counted as two characters.
