Yes to both, with one step you can’t skip.
A number already used in a WhatsApp app #
A number registered in WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business for Android or iPhone can be used for the API, but you must delete the WhatsApp account on that number first. Do that from the app on the phone holding the number, then start the signup in your panel. The number must be able to receive an SMS or a voice call, because Meta sends a 6-digit code to verify it.
Moving from another provider #
Go to WhatsApp > Setup and use Connect to Facebook to run Meta’s embedded signup for the number you’re moving. You sign in with the Facebook account that owns your Business Manager, and your existing WhatsApp Business Account and templates stay with your Business Manager rather than with your old provider.
Before you start, have these ready #
- Your brand’s display name, as customers should see it
- Your company’s legal name and official address
- A working website that explains what your business does. Meta checks this, and an incomplete Business Manager profile can get the account blocked straight away
- Access to the number for the verification code
Points worth knowing #
- Choose your Business Manager carefully. It can’t be changed once the number is registered.
- A number lives on one platform at a time. Test with a separate number rather than your production one.
- Short codes aren’t allowed. Landline and mobile numbers are fine; a toll-free number behind an IVR needs an exception so the verification call can be answered.
- Expect a short gap in sending while the number is registered on the new account. Plan the move outside campaign hours.
Want to try the platform before moving anything? WhatsApp > Setup also offers a sandbox on our own WABA number. You must disable the sandbox before onboarding your own number.
