What Is SMSC and SMPP? How Do They Relate?

An SMSC (Short Message Service Center) is the telecom infrastructure that stores, routes, and forwards SMS messages; SMPP is the protocol used to talk to it. When your application sends a message via SMPP, it’s opening a bind to an SMSC (either the operator’s own SMSC or an aggregator’s SMSC that has interconnects with the operators). The SMSC handles the actual routing to the recipient’s mobile network, retries on failure, and generates delivery reports. In short: SMSC is the “who,” SMPP is the “how you talk to it.”
